What it is

Turmeric chicken (薑黃雞) is the house speciality of Syan Syang (仙香飲食店) in Jiaxian, noted for its strong aroma. Turmeric (薑黃) is a root in the ginger family. Taiwan grows it, and Mingjian Township in Nantou County is the main centre for both turmeric and ginger.

How to eat it

Order it as one of several shared plates, with rice. Syan Syang's other signatures include wild boar, muntjac, spotted dove and giant mottled eel. It also serves fried taro balls and gives diners taro ice on the house.
